The Laya Gasa Trek is one of Bhutan’s most spectacular high-altitude trekking adventures, taking travelers through remote Himalayan landscapes, traditional mountain villages, and pristine wilderness. The route connects Paro, Laya, and Gasa, offering stunning views of sacred peaks such as Mount Jomolhari and Mount Jichu Drake while crossing dramatic mountain passes. Along the way, trekkers experience the unique culture of the Layap people and Bhutan’s untouched alpine environment.

Day 1 – Shana Zampa to Soi Thangthangkha

Distance: 22 km | Duration: 7–8 hours | Altitude: 3,630 m

The trek begins at Shana Zampa, following the Pa Chhu (Paro River) through forests of oak, rhododendron, and ferns. The trail gradually ascends along the river valley with beautiful views of surrounding mountains. Camp beside the river where the peaceful sound of flowing water creates a tranquil setting.

Day 2 – Soi Thangthangkha to Jangothang

Distance: 19 km | Duration: 6–7 hours | Altitude: 4,090 m

The trail passes through yak pastures, prayer flags, and traditional chortens. Arrive at Jangothang, the base camp of Mount Jomolhari, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Day 3 – Jangothang to Lingshi

Distance: 18 km | Duration: 6–7 hours | Altitude: 4,010 m

Climb toward Nyile La Pass (4,890 m) with spectacular views of Mount Jichu Drake and Mount Tserim KangDescend along the Mo Chhu tributary to the Lingshi campsite. Optional excursion to the base of Mount Tserim Kang for wildlife viewing and fishing.

Day 4 – Lingshi to Chebisa

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 5 hours | Altitude: 3,880 m

Visit the historic Lingshi Dzong before descending to the village of GayulContinue through green meadows and gentle ridges to the picturesque valley of Chebisa.

Day 5 – Chebisa to Shomuthang

Distance: 17 km | Duration: 7 hours | Altitude: 4,200 m

Look out for wildlife including blue sheep and Himalayan griffons. Cross Gombu La Pass (4,500 m) and descend through forests of rhododendron, cedar, and fir. Camp beside a stream in the remote Shomuthang Valley.

Day 6 – Shomuthang to Robluthang

Distance: 18 km | Duration: 6–7 hours

Climb to Jari La Pass (4,700 m) before descending into the Tasharijathang Valley, known as the summer habitat of the Bhutan TakinOvernight in this protected wildlife sanctuary.

Day 7 – Robluthang to Limithang

Distance: 19 km | Duration: 7 hours | Altitude: 4,140 m

Today you cross Shinje La Pass (4,900 m), the highest point of the trek. Descend through glacial valleys and alpine meadows before reaching Limithang, surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery.

Day 8 – Limithang to Laya

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 5 hours | Altitude: 3,800 m

A scenic walk through forests and small settlements leads to the remote village of Laya, one of Bhutan’s highest settlements. The Layap people have a unique culture and distinctive traditional dress.

Overnight: Tented Campsite / Village Stay

Day 9 – Laya (Rest Day)

Enjoy a relaxing day exploring Laya Village.

Visit local homes, learn about Layap traditions, or enjoy short hikes around the surrounding mountains. This rest day allows trekkers to acclimatize while experiencing the unique lifestyle of this remote Himalayan community.

Day 10 – Laya to Gasa

Take a short walk to Taksemaka, a military base camp, where the trek concludes. From here, drive to Gasa, known for its hot springs and rural Himalayan scenery. The journey ends with a scenic drive through Bhutan’s beautiful mountain countryside.

Trek Difficulty: The Laya Gasa Trek is considered moderate to challenging, suitable for travelers with good physical fitness and previous trekking experience.

Maximum Altitude: The trek reaches elevations between 4,500 m and 4,900 m.

Best Time to Trek: The best trekking seasons are:

  • Mid-March to Mid-June (Spring)
  • October and November (Autumn)

Trekking Accommodation: Accommodation during the trek is in fully supported tented camps, managed by an experienced trekking crew.

Wildlife: The trekking route passes through habitats where wildlife such as the Bhutan Takin, blue sheep, and Himalayan birds may be seen.

Travel Documents: Visitors must carry a passport with at least six months validity and a Bhutan tourist visa.
