The Tiger’s Nest Excursion is a 6-day cultural journey through western Bhutan, visiting the iconic destinations of Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha. Day 1 – Arrival in Paro and Transfer to Thimphu

Your Bhutan journey begins with arrival at Paro International Airport, the only international airport in Bhutan. After completing immigration formalities, you will meet your guide and begin the scenic drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. In the afternoon visit:National Memorial Chorten – built in memory of Bhutan’s Third King Changangkha Lhakhang – a historic temple overlooking Thimphu valley Motithang Takin Preserve – home of Bhutan’s unique national animal, the Takin. 

Tashichho Dzong – the seat of Bhutan’s government and central monastic body. Overnight stay in Thimphu.

Day 2 – Thimphu Cultural Sightseeing

Explore Bhutan’s cultural capital and discover the country’s traditional arts and heritage. Visit: National Library of Bhutan – home to rare Buddhist manuscriptsNational Institute for Zorig Chusum – Bhutan’s famous arts and crafts school. Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan – showcasing Bhutan’s traditional weaving techniques

If visiting during the weekend, explore the lively Centenary Farmers Market, where locals sell fresh organic produce, handicrafts, and traditional goods.

Overnight stay in Thimphu.

Day 3 – Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass

Drive from Thimphu to Punakha, crossing the spectacular Dochula Pass at 3,100 meters. At Dochula you can see the famous 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, built in honor of Bhutan’s Fourth King. Continue to Punakha and take a short walk through rice fields to visit Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of Fertility, associated with the famous Buddhist saint Drukpa Kunley.

Later visit the stunning Punakha Dzong, located at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers.

Day 4 – Punakha to Paro

In the morning, hike through the countryside to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, built by the Queen Mother for peace and protection.

Enjoy breathtaking views of Punakha Valley before driving to Paro. Visit Rinpung Dzong, an impressive fortress monastery overlooking the Paro valley.

Day 5 – Tiger’s Nest Monastery Hike

Today is the highlight of the trip — a hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest). Perched dramatically on a cliff about 900 meters above the Paro Valley, the monastery is one of Bhutan’s most sacred pilgrimage sites. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava flew to this location on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave here.After the hike, visit: Drukgyel Dzong, historic ruins commemorating Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan invaders Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples

Day 6 – Departure from Paro

Transfer to Paro International Airport for your departure flight.

Best Time to Visit Bhutan

The best seasons for this Bhutan cultural tour are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) when the weather is clear and mountain views are spectacular.

Fitness Level

The hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery takes approximately 4–5 hours round trip and requires moderate physical fitness.

Altitude Information

Travelers will cross high mountain passes including Dochula Pass (3,100m). It is recommended to stay hydrated and walk at a comfortable pace.
